Dan took a leave from the Committee on Human Development for the year l971-72 to co-lead with Gregory Bateson, a year of study for 30 students enrolled at the International School of America. Karl Jaeger, who established the International School of America, invited faculty members from various universities to lead and provide classes for a group of around 30 university students each year on a trip around the world.

About the International School of America

The International School of America was founded by myself as a non-profit educational foundation in 1958. Its mission was and is to maximize the educational benefits that formal education may derive from international travel. The round-the-world plane ticket was recognized as the most expedient vehicle since it provides for students and faculty to reach between six and nine destinations during an eight-month academic year. In each destination each individual student lives with a native family for two or three weeks while engaged in class meetings, guest lectures, field trips and particular individual field projects. The academic courses are generally related to a specific theme.

The group in 1971-72 traveled with Karl Jaeger, (coordinator of the trip), Gregory Bateson, Dan Freedman, and their families. The Nature and Culture of Man was the title of the course conducted by Gregory and Dan. The group made stops in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan; Hong Kong, Bali (Den Pasar)(Gregory Bateson was to revisit Bali over 30 years after he and Margaret Mead had completed their anthropological study of Balinese families); Kandy, Ceylon (Sri Lanka); Pondicherry and New Delhi, India; Nairobi, Kenya; Bari Italy was the final stop of the trip before our return home. Our longest stay of nine weeks was in Japan; our second longest stay of six weeks was in Bali.
